Who can use it: Enterprise and above.
The Market Movers tab above works one race at a time. Market Movers for the day (Racecards menu → Market Movers) puts every meeting on one page, so you can see the day's steamers and drifters without opening each card in turn.
What is on the page
- Biggest steamers and biggest drifters — the largest moves each way across all of the day's racing. Rows listed chooses how many: the top 10, the top 25, or every mover on the day. On All meetings the course is shown by its short name (Wolv, Ling, Leop) to keep the table narrow; hover it for the full name.
- Lists — Side by side shows both lists at once. One at a time gives one list the full width, with a Steamers / Drifters switch above it — the better choice on a day that has been run, when each row also carries the result. The page remembers which you chose and which list you were on.
- Meeting buttons — click a course to see its own top five each way (or more, by Rows listed) and only its races; the Course column drops out, since every row is at that course. All meetings puts the whole day back.
- Every race — each race opens to show all its runners ranked by move, with the 8.30pm, 7.30am and 10.30am prices side by side, the Power Rating rank, and how concentrated the market is.
- Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow and a date box for any day back to 2018. On a day that has been run, each mover shows where it finished and its Betfair Starting Price (BSP), and the top lists carry a line such as "3 winners from 10" with the return to level stakes at Betfair SP after 2% commission.
- Click any horse to open its racecard straight on the Market Movers tab.
Market history
From the 10.30am prices, any horse that has moved 5 points or more since 8.30pm, backed or drifting, has a Market history link, under its name on the Since 8.30pm window of this page and under its trainer on the racecard's Market Movers tab. Click it to see what a move like this has done before:
- The yard — how many of the trainer's last 1,000 runners moved this far the same way (5, 10, 15 or 20 points or more), how many won, and what they returned to level stakes at three prices: the 10.30am price, the same with best odds guaranteed, and Betfair SP after 2% commission. Rule 4 and dead heats are settled as they are in the System Builder.
- The horse — whether this is its strongest support (or biggest drift) in its earlier runs, how often it has moved 5 points or more that way before, how many of those it won, and how it ran the last time.
Fewer than 10 runners at that level shows the wins and runs only. From 10 to 29 the returns are marked as a small sample. The history counts earlier days only and goes back to 2018, so a past day shows what you would have seen that morning. For this history the margin is taken out of the prices and only the runners still in are counted, so a withdrawal cannot fake a move; that can put it a few tenths from the Move column.
The same figures are in the System Builder under Market History: rules in Add a rule, six tables on the Market tab of Breakdowns and columns on the Runs tab, so you can back-test them. They are also columns on My Card and in Data Export. Trainer, jockey, horse and breeding profile pages have a By Market Move box on the Breakdown tab, with a Build a System button on each row. All of them are blank until the 10.30am prices are in.
How a move is measured
Exactly as on the racecard tab: the change in the runner's implied chance (100 divided by the decimal price), in percentage points. A horse backed from 10/1 into 2/1 has gone from a 9.1% chance to 33.3%, a move of +24.2. Measuring in points keeps the list honest: a 50/1 shot easing to 100/1 has barely moved at all (−1.0), whatever the price looks like. The green and red bands are the same six used on the tab.
The three windows
| Window | Compares | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Since 8.30pm | The evening price with the latest price in | The whole move so far — the default |
| Overnight | 8.30pm with 7.30am | Who was backed when the prices first went up |
| This morning | 7.30am with 10.30am | Race-day money only |
Until the 7.30am prices arrive there is nothing to compare, and the page says so rather than showing a list of zeros.
Non-runners and the asterisk
When a horse is withdrawn, every other runner in the race shortens — not because anyone backed them, but because the same market is now shared between fewer horses. More than half of all races lose a runner, so left alone this would fill the steamers list with horses nobody has backed. On a declared card the page therefore works out what the withdrawal alone would have done to each price and takes it out; what is left is the real move. Those moves carry an asterisk, and hovering it shows the unadjusted figure. (On a day that has already been run, withdrawn runners are no longer on the card, so no adjustment is possible there.)
What RaceMetrics thinks of each mover
Three things sit beside the prices, so you can weigh a move against what we already know about the horse rather than taking it on its own.
- RMP — the RaceMetrics Model Price, struck each morning before the market moves, as a fair 100% book. The model's top-rated runner is shown in gold. The column only appears on races the model priced, so you never get a column of dashes.
- Mkt vs RMP — the latest price turned into a fair chance, minus the model's, in percentage points. +2.0 means the market gives the horse two points more chance than the model does; a negative figure means the market prices it bigger than the model. It is blue and amber rather than green and red on purpose: it is a disagreement, not a tip. The bookmakers' margin is taken out first, and taken out the way a real book carries it — heaviest on the outsiders, lightest on the favourite — so the comparison is fair at both ends of the market.
- TIP and SYS pills next to a horse's name — one of the day's RaceMetrics Tips, and one of your own saved systems' qualifiers. Hover the SYS pill to see which systems flagged it. The same pills you see on Runners A-Z and the racecard.
Both RMP columns are sortable, so you can put the day in the model's order, or lead with the runners the market and the model disagree about most.
RMP and the Mkt vs RMP column are part of RaceMetrics Pro and Proform Premium. The saved-system pills need the System Builder, and appear for today and the days ahead — a qualifier is a pre-race idea. Everything else on the page is the same for every plan that has it.
Sorting
Every column heading is clickable. Click once to sort, again to reverse; the heading in use turns amber with an arrow. The two top lists sort together, so clicking Off puts both into race-time order, Course groups them by meeting, Price ranks by the latest price and Result brings the winners to the top. In these lists Move sorts on the size of the move, so "biggest first" means the same thing for drifters as for steamers. Sorting only re-orders the movers already listed — it never changes which horses made the list.
The race tables also sort together: click a heading in any race and every race follows, so you can read the whole card by racecard number, by any of the three prices, by Power Rating rank, or (once run) by finishing position or Betfair SP. There, Move runs from the biggest steamer down to the biggest drifter. A race you have opened stays open while you sort, a runner with no figure always goes to the bottom, and your choice is remembered on your device.
Filters
Code (Flat or Jumps), Handicaps, Country (Great Britain, or Ireland including Northern Ireland) and Smallest move listed. Your choices are remembered on your device.
A lens, not a tip
A price move tells you what has already happened in the market — by the time you can see it, it is in the price. The results line on a past day is there so you can judge for yourself how movers went on to run; one day's record is not a system.
Tier and access
Every signed-in member sees the day's top three steamers and top three drifters. The full page — the top tens, every course, every race, the windows and the results — is part of Enterprise, RaceMetrics Pro and Proform Premium, the same plans as the racecard tab.
