Every fixture-list argument now ends with the same fear: that Irish yards are propping up British racing and might stop. We measured it. Irish-based yards supply under 2% of British runners, and removing every one of them would take a seventh of a horse off the average field. Then we looked at the top of jump racing, where they are one runner in four, half of the Cheltenham Festival, and taking home £19m a year.

Last Thursday the BHA published its 2027 fixture policy and conceded that field sizes will "remain under pressure at times of the year". We measured exactly how much pressure: 218,951 British races since 2004. The average field has fallen from 11.02 to 8.43, and two in five races now pay fewer than three each-way places.
