A horse can win and beat nothing. Future Form takes each runner's last three races and looks at what the rest of those fields have done since — then scores it out of 100. A high score means the horse has been beating opponents who went on to run well; a low one means the company was weak.

If A beat C by three lengths and B lost to C by two, that is a five-length picture — and Collateral Form traces those shared opponents for every pair in the race, adjusted for weight, class and how long ago it was.
