The Story
Proform Racing was established in 1995 after many years of research and development, with the delivery of its first software product in 1999. Owner and founder Simon Walton combined a long-standing interest in horse racing with a programming background to bring a new analytical approach to UK and Irish racing.
Proform's original innovation was a graphical view of every horse's performance in a race, and a unique approach to averaging speed ratings against user-definable variables. Final ratings became a dynamic function of the parameters set by the user — a flexibility no other racing tool offered at the time. The result was a Form Book used by professional racing analysts and serious form students.
Twenty-five-plus years on, RaceMetrics launched in February 2026 as the modern web-native analytics platform built on top of that long-collected dataset. Where the original Proform software was for the deep-form expert, RaceMetrics opens the same underlying data to anyone with a phone or a laptop — through proprietary RaceMetrics Ratings, a daily tipping model, a free weekly competition (RM7), and tools like Form Expert, What Wins and Ask RaceMetrics for natural-language querying.
RaceMetrics tracks form across seven connection types — Horses, Trainers, Jockeys, Owners, Sires, Dams and Damsires — and updates ratings every morning after the previous day's racing. We do not accept bets or provide gambling services: we publish analysis and skill-based competitions for people who want to understand the form, not just the result.
Founder
Simon Walton
Simon founded Proform Racing in 1995 and has spent the last 25+ years building horse racing analytics tools used by professional racing analysts and serious punters. His background combines computer programming with a deep working interest in UK and Irish form — the unusual combination that produced Proform's dynamic ratings engine and, more recently, the RaceMetrics platform.
The same dataset, ratings model and editorial direction sit behind every page of RaceMetrics today.
By the Numbers
What Makes RaceMetrics Different
Proprietary rating system, not a re-skin of public ratings. RaceMetrics Ratings are calculated from our own 25+ year dataset using an Elo-style algorithm that updates after every race based on opposition quality, finishing position relative to expectations, and race conditions. 1500 is average, 1550+ strong, 1600+ elite.
Seven connections, one Combined Score. Most racing tools rate horses or maybe trainers. We rate horses, trainers, jockeys, owners, sires, dams and damsires — and combine the six connections into a single Combined Score (Owner 20%, Trainer 20%, Jockey 20%, Dam 18%, Sire 12%, Damsire 10%). The highest Combined Score in a race historically wins 22.97% of the time — 2.15 times what random selection would produce.
Built for understanding, not just selecting. Form Expert, What Wins and Ask RaceMetrics are tools for exploring why a horse is rated where it is, what conditions favour it, and which historical patterns it matches. The daily RaceMetrics Tip is a single curated pick — but the platform around it is for people who want to do their own form analysis.
Not a gambling service. We publish analysis, ratings, statistics, and a free skill-based weekly competition. We do not take bets, hold customer funds, or operate as a bookmaker.
