A steamer has been backed and its price has shortened; a drifter has been let go and its price has lengthened. Each move runs from the 8.30pm evening show to the latest bookmaker prices (7.30am, then 10.30am), measured in points of chance so that a gamble on an outsider and a move on a favourite sit on one scale.

What is a steamer in horse racing?
A steamer is a horse whose price shortens sharply because it is being backed, for example 10/1 the night before into 2/1 on the morning of the race. A drifter is the opposite: a horse whose price lengthens because the market is going against it.
How does RaceMetrics measure a price move?
In percentage points of implied chance, not in ticks or fractions: 10/1 is a 9.1% chance and 2/1 is 33.3%, so 10/1 into 2/1 is a move of 24.2 points. That puts a gamble on an outsider and a move on a favourite on one scale. When a horse in the race is withdrawn, every other price shortens, so moves in those races are adjusted for the non-runner and marked with an asterisk.
Should I back every steamer?
A horse that has been backed does win more often than one that has drifted, but the shorter price already reflects that, so backing every steamer at its final price has not been a profitable rule on its own. Treat a move as one more piece of information to weigh with the form, the going and the trip.
Where these prices come from
RaceMetrics is built on the Proform Racing database, British and Irish racing data professionals since 1995. Bookmaker prices are taken at 8.30pm the evening before racing, at 7.30am and at 10.30am. The free Trainers in Form page shows which yards are running hot and cold today, and Fast Results has today's results as each race is run.
