Members keep asking us what matters most in an each-way system. The video builds one from scratch in the System Builder and checks it, in under three minutes.

1. The place terms

Everything else depends on them. Each-way terms pay two places with 5 to 7 runners, three with 8 or more, and four in a handicap with 16 or more runners. That fourth place is where an each-way bet earns its keep, so the first two rules are Handicap: Yes and Field Size: 16 or more.

2. A price range

Each-way bets earn their money on bigger prices, where a place still pays well. The video uses the Evening Price, set at about 8.30pm the night before, between 13 and 34 in decimal odds: 12/1 to 33/1.

3. One rating rank

Then one rating to pick out the horses most likely to finish in the first four. The video uses Collateral Score Rank, 1 to 3. Collateral Score compares runners who may never have met through horses they have both raced against, allowing for weight, class and how recent the run was. It is worked out before the off.

4. Read the two halves together

An each-way bet is two bets, so read two rows of the System Results: Betfair SP is the win half and BF Place is the place half. Win & Plc, in the panel above, shows how often the horses finished in the first four. From January 2023 both halves of this system are in profit at Betfair SP after 2% commission, the place half the steadier of the two.

5. Check it isn't luck

One good result can be luck. The Data split setting shares the races out at random into Half A and Half B. Run the system on each: if it only works on one half, it was probably the luck of those races. This one holds on both.

6. Each-way staking and the breakdowns

The Staking tab's Each-Way mode puts half the stake on the win and half on the place, both at Betfair SP, so you see the two halves as one bet: a winner collects both halves, a placed horse the place half. Then the Breakdowns show where it is working. Search race type and look at the place columns: it is strongest on the Flat. If a row stands out, add it as a rule and run it again, one rule at a time, so you always know which change moved the figures.

A starting point

So the factors that matter most are the place terms, the right price range, and a rating that finds horses who finish in the frame. Treat a system like this as a starting point and keep checking it: past results never promise future ones. Every rule here is known before the off, so once you save it, its runners show up on Today's Qualifiers whenever one comes along.
