Around twenty questions typed into the System Builder's Ask box over the last fortnight began the same way: lay something. Every one of them lost at least one condition on the way in. The commonest was some version of "lay the favourite in 12-runner handicaps" — so here is what actually happens to it, and where the lay was waiting all along.
Why half of it disappears
Type that sentence and two rules arrive: Handicap: Yes and Field Size 12 – 12. The phrase "lay the favourite" goes into the amber "I couldn't express these" panel, with a note explaining that laying is a staking mode, to be set in the staking panel.
That note is right, and the panel is doing its job — but two things have quietly gone missing. The favourite is no longer part of the selection at all, because the whole clause was read as a betting instruction. And "12-runner" has been taken literally: exactly twelve, rather than twelve or more.
Nothing is broken here. A system's rules describe which horses you mean. Which way you bet them is a separate question — and it has its own home.
Describe the selection first
Rephrased as a selection — "favourites in handicaps with 12 or more runners" — Ask returns three clean rules with no amber panel: Favourite Status, Handicap, and Field Size of at least 12. On the day we filmed, that difference was not academic: the literal twelve-runner build found no qualifiers at all, while the corrected one found 49.
Run over five years, it matches 11,753 bets and 2,568 winners — a strike rate just under 22%. The verdict chips are blunt about what that is worth: Market-par (A/E 1.00), −1.04% ROI at Betfair SP, Not significant, Holdout consistent. Big-field handicap favourites win about as often as their price says they should. Nobody is giving them away.
Then choose your side, on the Staking tab
The Staking tab re-stakes the exact bets a system matched, plan by plan, from level stakes through to a fractional Kelly. Backed level, this book finishes at 868 points from a 1,000-point bank. The only plan showing a profit is a loss-recovery progression — and the bust column prices that dream honestly: across 200 reshuffles of the same bets, it broke the bank in roughly eight of every ten.
Change Bet type to Lay and recalculate, and every figure rebuilds from the other side of the book. The outcome inverts — a beaten favourite is now the win — and stakes are set by liability, the amount at risk if the favourite gets home, with Betfair commission included. Level stakes on the lay side finish at 974 points. Par is par: the exchange takes its cut whichever way you stand.
